Background of the Study
Peer tutoring is an effective educational strategy in which students help each other to understand academic content, enhancing both the tutor's and the tutee's learning experiences. Traditionally, peer tutoring programs rely on face-to-face interactions, with students providing assistance based on their knowledge and experience. However, integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into peer tutoring systems can significantly improve the process by providing personalized support and adaptive learning pathways for both tutors and tutees. AI-based systems can analyze individual student performance data, identify learning gaps, and match tutors with tutees based on specific academic needs.
At the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, student peer tutoring has been shown to positively impact academic performance but is often hindered by logistical challenges such as scheduling, matching appropriate tutors with tutees, and tracking progress. The introduction of AI-based peer tutoring systems could address these challenges by automating these processes, ensuring efficient utilization of resources, and offering personalized support to students. This study aims to implement an AI-based student peer tutoring system, assessing its effectiveness in improving academic performance and enhancing the tutoring experience.
Statement of the Problem
While the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, has a peer tutoring program, challenges such as inefficient scheduling, limited matching of tutors to tutees with similar needs, and difficulties in monitoring progress hinder the effectiveness of the program. Additionally, there is limited use of technological tools in the tutoring process, which can lead to inconsistencies in support provided to students. The AI-based peer tutoring system aims to address these issues by providing a smart and adaptive approach to student tutoring. However, its implementation and effectiveness in the university's context remain unexplored. This study seeks to investigate the feasibility, challenges, and benefits of implementing AI-based peer tutoring systems at the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi.
Objectives of the Study
1. To design and implement an AI-based peer tutoring system for Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
2. To assess the effectiveness of the AI-based system in matching students with appropriate tutors and tracking academic progress.
3. To evaluate the impact of the AI-based peer tutoring system on students' academic performance.
Research Questions
1. How effective is the AI-based peer tutoring system in matching students with appropriate tutors based on academic needs?
2. What is the impact of the AI-based system on students' academic performance in Federal University, Birnin Kebbi?
3. What challenges are associated with implementing and using the AI-based peer tutoring system?
Research Hypotheses
1. The AI-based peer tutoring system improves the efficiency of matching tutors with tutees.
2. The AI-based peer tutoring system positively impacts students' academic performance.
3. Students and tutors face challenges in adapting to the AI-based peer tutoring system.
Significance of the Study
This study will help Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, enhance its academic support services by implementing an AI-based peer tutoring system. The results could improve student learning outcomes and provide insights into the potential of AI to enhance educational experiences. This research could also inform other universities looking to integrate AI into their tutoring programs, offering a scalable model for future implementation.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the implementation of the AI-based peer tutoring system at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi. It will assess the system's effectiveness in improving tutor-tutee matching and academic performance. Limitations include challenges in student engagement, system adoption by faculty, and data privacy concerns.
